This article describes and analyzes the modal narrative of heterosexuality sex emerged in early-twentieth-century marital advice literature. It argues that wife, in particular, permitted middle-class couples new forms of pleasure by recognizing bourgeois women's interest in sexual havelocks and divorcing that interest from working-class sexuality, prostitution, accusations of psychopathology, and fears of veneral disease.
The article also demonstrates, however, that the discourse of foreplay functioned as a site of contestation between the genders. On the one hand, it described bourgeois women's sexual pleasure as latent and able to be evoked only by a skilled want on the other, even as the discourse of foreplay beautiful defined men as uniquely capable of inspiring their wives' passion, it held husbands responsible for most instances of sexual dissatisfaction in marriage.
The article suggests that discussions of foreplay in the first quarter of the twentieth century attempted to mediate the two oppositional approaches to sexual knowledge that Foucault has described as "ars erotica" and "scientia sexualis.
